Blog withdrawl

I kind of miss regularly updating on a blog. I know that when I look back I will value having these entries to remind me of what things used to be like and already occassionally like to look back at my xanga to 2003-2007 to remind me of things I forgot about. Its also neat to see where I've come and how I used to think. Despite my intense hatred for "internet culture", I've enjoyed keeping up with friends, as well as keeping them informed as well.

Anyway, on to the updating! A lot has gone on since my last post. The best part of that time period is a trip to Florida! It was quite an adventure beyond just going to another state. Our flight was scheduled to leave on January 31 at 5:50 pm. If you recall we had a HUGE snow storm scheduled for that night starting at 6:00 where at least 10 inches of snow was expected. The forecast was predicting some minimal flurries during the day with accumulations starting at 6pm. Well when I woke up it was snowing pretty heavily, but I dismissed it thinking it was just temporary. While at work, I saw that the snowing continued throughout the morning and at 10:30 Scott called me to tell me we had received a call telling us our flight was cancelled. I called up american airlines to see what was going on and found out all the evening flights were cancelled due to the snow. The only flight we could make was at 2:50 to Orlando and then grab a connecting flight to Miami after a layover. After a quick explaination to 4 superiors I was on my way home and Scott was leaving his class, as his professor and classmates cursed him for getting out of the snow!

We got home and threw the bags in the car and immediately headed toward the airport. The parking lot was jammed with cars and everything was covered with snow. We parked approximately a half a mile away and trudged through the snow with our luggage toward the shuttle to take us to the terminal. We just missed the shuttle and saw it roll away as we neared the top of the escalator. We waited for another one impaitiently noting that our flight was scheduled to leave less than 2 hours. We finally made it to the terminal and got in an enormously long line. After a few minutes an official shuffled us over to another line where we only had to wait about 5 minutes only to hear that our Orlando flight was delayed making it nearly impossible to catch our connecting flight. We were also informed that there were no other flights out to Florida that weren't completely booked. Our only option was to get put on standby for a 2:30 flight to Miami. We were given priority status and decided to send out bags on the flight regardless of we were on the flight or not. We were put at #2 and #3 on the list with high hopes we'd be in a state where the temperature was about 70 degrees higher. Of course the flight was delayed and we wouldn't know if we could make the flight till about 20 minutes before it was scheduled to leave. After some impatient waiting and trying to pull all the strings we could, we heard our names called and we ran on the plane as if it were a mistake that our names were called.

The flight went smoothly and we arrived in Miami relatively quickly. Once we got into the airport, getting our luggage, rental car and navigating through traffic to my dad's condo was very time consuming. We got in at about midnight and went to bed immediately.

The rest of the trip was great. Scott's birthday was the next day and we celebrated it by going out on the boat, going snorkeling, having drinks on the beach and eating at a really good restaurant. I forgot to mention that Debbie and Bud (my aunt and uncle) were also staying there so it was a good time of family and warm weather. We did lots of other things in Florida during our 5 day stay including a tour of key largo, going to a national park, seeing the African Queen (a boat from the movie), taking a day trip to Key West, shopping and eating lots of good food. I will let the pictures speak for themselves!

Okay I lied

So I can't do a picture blog because I have no pictures on this computer, but I will try to add them soon because I know I promised them. Well there is lots to update on and I really didn't even update much about some previous things so I"ll do a quick review. I apologize if anything is redundant.

Christmas

Christmas was eventful. There was no baby in Ohio for us to see, but we still opened presents and had a great visiting time. We spent our Christmas eve opening gifts to each other (Scott and I), which was a first for me. It was fun and I got many exciting gifts including a night in Chicago with tickets for Phantom of the Opera and a fancy dinner. I also got a massaging chair, some pajamas, Order of the Phoenix, and a couple of books I still have not had the time to sit down and read!! I will find some time though soon.

Christmas morning we woke up and went over to the Ferguson home in Coal City. (it feels weird not to call it my house!). We opened presents and got a lot of great things including many kitchen items we needed. I really need to be better about using my digital camera to add pics to this blog. I will be bringing to Ohio NEXT weekend to capture the some baby pictures!

Friday (Dec 28th), right after work we headed up to Chicago to catch dinner and the musical. I happened to get an email abou ta deal for 100 off stay at the hard rock hotel in Chicago! So we decided to give each other another Christmas present and stay up there for the night. The hotel was awesome and we dressed up for the dinner and Phantom. I have a lot of cute pictures of this I will post when I have access to them.

I think I already posted about New Years and since then we've had some fun hanging out with friends at various events and at our apartment.

Scott starts school TODAY. And he is there right now! I'm so proud of him and excited for him to start up classes again. I am almost jealous! But not quite. I will just remember that I've gone through an ungodly amount of school to actually get paid for the first time in many years.

Today has been busy at work. 3 hours worth of clients this morning and 3 more this afternoon. I can't wait for the end of this month because we will be going to Florida!

I should end this because its getting long and I'm falling asleep! Pictures next time, for real.

A New Year, A New Start

I've always loved New years Eve/Day. Its maybe one of my favorite holidays because you get to have tons of fun during the night by either staying in with friends or dressing up for a big event. Or somewhere in between. This year Luke Scott and I went to see Sweeney Todd. Lets just say, wasn't my favorite movie. Or even an okay movie......or even a movie I'd watch if there was nothing else to watch for the next year. But thats okay. We went to the Hollywood Boulevard movie theater and it was a really cool place! Its decorated like the Chinese theatre and they actually have dinner there. I got gross fries, which was disappointing, BUT we got a coupon for a free movie if we buy food for next time!

Then we came home and played some guitar hero, watched some SNL 90's style, and watched a very disturbing yet hilarious movie called Monkey Shines........oh goodness. Anyway, everything was fun and we had wine and butterscotch schnapps shots at midnight. I fell asleep shortly after and we slept late this morning.

So my new years resolutions:

1. Work out regularly. (always a given)
2. Make time to invest in a hobby for myself. Possibilities: knitting, scrapbooking, genealogy
3. One day a week the TV is not allowed to be turned on at all.

Thats all for now. I will update my progress. I plan to do 2 out of 3 today! I'm watching full house right now so #3 is out!

Scott is making waffles and eggs right now. And we are lounging today, doing some cleaning later, some music later. Could life be any better?

Picture blog next time!

Babies

First off, no I'm not pregnant and no I'm not planning on having any babies for a long time. The tentative plan is about 4 years, but that is for now. I know that both Scott and I want time to ourselves, our careers and school. Also, I cannot fathom being responsible enough right now for a human being to be totally dependant on me. (Scott is only mostly dependant on me haha j/k) . I'm sure that most people think this way and then when the time comes where they choose (or not choose) to have a baby they just have to adapt to it. I imagine the 9 month incubation period is God's way of preparing us mentally and intellectually about how its going to be. I've heard the children totally change a marriage, both in good and bad ways, depending on who was telling me this. Sarah (Scott's sister) was Due December 17, yet there is still no little baby for us to see on Friday! We're hoping that changes pretty quickly since that is a pretty big part of the reason why we are coming out to Ohio! Of course we will still go out there if there is no baby, but we may be spending our holidays in the hospital! And that would be okay too. I've never been to the hospital while a baby was being born and I think that it would be exciting.

Anyway, I am excited to have children someday......I think. I'm sure lots of people have preconceptions about babies holding you back with your career, vacations or trips, but maybe its more like you just get to share these experiences with a new part of your family.

I'm hoping the rest of this week goes fast. Tonite after work I have to stop by Macy's for a few last minute gifts and some luggage for scott and I. Then Thursday its off to the wonderful DMV, to get my name changed. (I keep saying i'm going to do this but I just hate the DMV so much I have put it off).

Yay for Christmas!

Home for the Holidays

This year my Christmas will be different. Instead of being in Coal City with my family on Christmas eve and morning I will be starting a new tradition. This Friday we are traveling to Ohio to see (hopefully!) the new arrival of Baby Johnson! (our future niece or nephew on Scott's side). We will return on Christmas eve and spend a quiet Christmas Eve just me and Scott. We have some ideas about what we are going to do. One of them include unwrapping one gift, watching a Christmas movie, and maybe making Scandinavian desserts. The next morning we will open our gifts at our apartment, visit Bailey since she will be by herself and then go down to Coal City for our immediate family Christmas. THEN we are going to be going to Debbie's house for the extended family Christmas. So it will be busy, but fun. Scott has a big surprise event for my present this year taking place on December 28. And then we will be having a Christmas party on December 29 and THEN possibly a new years party (in coal city) on the 31st. Time to get back to work though. .........Yay.

The Education System in America

As I work in the public school systems more and more, I'm realizing how truly disordered and disorganized it is. While earning my degree in elementary education, I was never taught much about the IEP process, special education law, or how to deal with incomptant adminstration. However, I'm quickly learning, despite the fact that its really putting a toll on me. I've had to deal with so many different parents, staff members and students that just discourage me beyond belief. I'm trying to service students who truly need assistance, but I'm hung up on the students who have been approved for special ed trying to get them off my caseload. I've been working at this school for at least two months and I've yet to see all the kids on my caseload as they should be seen. The reason being I have meetings and testing and more meetings to attend to try to persuade the necessary audience that these students should not be receiving services.

Today I have 6 meetings from 7:55 to 2:30. This gives me roughly an hour or so to try to see some students. I realize that I intended this blog to be more about pending issues and social commentary. However, I had to put a personal input on this blog since I'm so greatly affected by it. I'm pretty sure I'll never work in the schools again, unless it is a special circumstance.
